Cork footballers got their 2009 campaign off to a winning start today, beating C.I.T. 1-15 to 2-05 in the first round of the McGrath Cup in Pairc Ui Rinn. They now play Clare next Sunday.

It has been revealed the Gerald McCarthy has sent a letter to all the members of last years panel in an attempt to try and broker a peace deal before the start of the Waterford Crystal Tournament at the start of January.

Just 4 years after their foundation, Dripsey were yesterday crowned Munster Junior Club Champions, beating Kilgarvan of Kerry in the final by 2-11 to 1-03.

Gerald McCarthy has named 3 more members of his backroom staff for the coming season. Aodhan MacGearailt the former Kerry footballer, Martin McSweeney who has previously been fitness coach for Cork minor hurlers and Mike McGurn who has been a coach for Ireland and the Ospreys in Rugby Union.

On the playing fields, Nemo Rangers lost just their 2nd game in 16 Munster Championship campaigns yesterday, losing by a point to Dromcollogher-Broadford of Limerick. Blarney are the Intermediate Hurling Champions, Dripsey are into the Junior Hurling Final while Eire Og were beaten by Cappawhite of Tipperary in the Junior Football Championship

The draws and dates have been announced for the Munster Championships in Minor and U-21 hurling and football for 2009 as well as the Waterford Crystal Hurling Tournament and McGrath Cup Football Tournament.

The schedule for next years National Hurling and Football Leagues have been announced. Assuming Cork will be playing, they will play Meath in their first football game on February 1st and Dublin in their first hurling game on February 8th.

Some good news for Cork hurling today as Sarsfields beat Clonlara of Clare by 0-26 to 0-10 to reach the Munster Semi-Final in 2 weeks time.

It has been confirmed that none of the current members of the Cork hurling panel will play under Gerald McCarthy. In an interview with the Irish Examiner, Ben O Connor also revealed that several of the 'younger' members of the squad had received calls, 'advising' them to go back to training.

Cork received 1 hurling all-star last night - Ben O Connor at number 10. Kilkenny got 9, Tipperary - 3, Cork, Waterford and Galway - 1 each.

Cork received no football All-Stars this year, despite winning the Munster Championship and reaching the All-Ireland Semi-Final. Tyrone got 7, Kerry 4, Westmeath 2, Armagh and Dublin 1 each.

Cork have been drawn to play Tipperary in the first round of the Munster Senior Hurling Championship and Waterford in the first round of the football championship.

At Congress today, a motion to move both Galway and Antrim into the Leinster Hurling Championship for a 3 year trial period was passed. Also passed was a new discipliniary procedure, whereby a person who commits any one of six 'highly disruptive' fouls will be replaced by a substitute. This will be on trial during the National Leagues and early season competitions.

Corks senior camogie team made up for the dissappointment of losing last years final to Wexford, beat Galway by 5 points today before a crowd of just over 18,000. It was Corks 23rd All-Ireland at this grade and they are now just 3 titles behind Dublin on the roll of honour. |
